Batteries and power banks: dangerous goods

A power bank and a spare battery are not ordinary cargo in the eyes of the shipping companies. They are dangerous goods in Class 9, and that means specific requirements that cannot be worked around:

  • UN38.3 test report: a mandatory safety test report for lithium cells and batteries. No serious factory is without one, and you should ask for it under the specific model name rather than a generic one.
  • Safety data sheet (MSDS): required by the shipping company.
  • Approved packaging and warning labels on the cartons.
  • Air freight restrictions: many airlines refuse power banks, or accept them only under conditions and with a limited capacity. In practice, sea freight suits these items better, so plan for it from the start instead of discovering the refusal once the goods are ready.

And watch the declared capacity: many cheap power banks are printed with a capacity far higher than the real one. That is commercial fraud, and it exposes you to liability towards your customer and towards the regulators alike. Ask for an actual capacity test on a random sample before loading — a simple test whose result is conclusive.

Wireless devices: an additional approval

Anything that transmits a wireless signal — Bluetooth earphones, speakers, wireless chargers, trackers and smart watches — falls within radio spectrum regulation, and may need an approval from the telecommunications regulator in addition to the usual SABER registration.

This approval takes time and requires technical documents from the factory, including radio frequency test reports. Start it before production, because a shipment that arrives without the approval has no route to release, whatever its quality. And ask the factory plainly: does it hold valid frequency test reports for that particular model? If the answer is vague, the model is not for you.

Chargers and cables: safety first

A charger is an electrical product connected straight to the mains, and it is the accessory that causes the most accidents. Require:

  • Electrical safety conformity, registered on SABER.
  • A three-pin Type G plug as approved in the Kingdom, fitted at the factory and not through an adapter.
  • Protection against overvoltage, overheating and short circuit, stated in the specification and not in the advertising.
  • A cable cross-section suited to the stated current. A conductor thinner than it should be is the common cause of overheating.

And remember that these products are used in the car a great deal in Saudi Arabia, where the cabin temperature exceeds seventy degrees Celsius. Require a performance test at high temperature.

Counterfeiting: a red line

Shenzhen's markets are full of cables, chargers and earphones carrying the logos of the global phone companies. Importing them without a licence makes them counterfeit goods, destined for seizure and destruction with the importer held liable. And there is an added dimension here: a counterfeit charger is not merely a trading offence but a genuine safety hazard to your customer and to their device.

The rule: build on your own brand or on the factory's brand. Compatibility with devices is stated descriptively, not as a logo: you write that the product fits a particular model, and you do not print the company's logo on the product or on the box.

Cases and protectors: a safe, fast-moving category

Phone cases and screen protectors are the least risky items and the fastest moving, but their success depends on one thing: keeping pace with new models. A case sells in the first six months of a phone's life, and after that it becomes stock. Ask for the moulds for new models early and ship by air for the major launches if you have to, because the speed advantage here more than covers the freight difference.

And on screen protectors: specify the hardness, the type of adhesive and the fitting method. A protector that leaves air bubbles is returned at once, and the difference between good and poor is small in cost and large in the reviews.

Labelling and packaging

The pack must carry the product details, the power rating, the connector type, the compatibility, the country of origin and the importer's name, with Arabic on the information addressed to the consumer. And packaging in this category is part of the sale: an accessory is bought on visual impression at the point of sale, and a good box lifts the price by far more than it costs.
